I am not a lazy jackass when I work. I do everything that I can for the guests that I take care of, but sometimes even after doing an amazing job, people still don't tip, and that's when I get angry...
YDI. The only times I don't tip is when the service sucks. At least they told you why they didn't tip. Time to pull your head out of your ass.
It's not fair to assume that she was giving bad service. Just because you only tip poorly when given unsatisfactory service, doesn't mean that's how everyone works. I work as a hostess and I've seen some of the servers get tipped shitty or stiffed, even though they were working their asses off for the customers. Some people are just cheap assholes, or they can't be pleased no matter how hard you try. Also, some people think that stunts like the one the OP described are hilarious. "Here's a tip for you! Hahahahaha. Get it?"

A table of 13 is hard. Even if you're a pro at it, it's hard. Just for getting any service at all they'd have been sensible to leave you the baseline 15%. I suspect they just wanted an excuse to give you nothing because they were cheap jerks.
OMG What assholes... I'd like to see them do what you did! This is why servers argue over who should get a big table, because they're REALLY hard.
Pretty sure this is fake. Gratuity is added to tables of 6 or more at pretty much EVERY restaurant. Duhr.

Waitressess have no control over how long the food takes, unless on rare occasion they forget to put back an order. It's almost always the fault of the kitchen. But no one takes away their pay for the day.
I don't care how much you make per hour. Waiting on tables means your tip is based on performance. As a customer it is not my responsibility to make sure you get paid well. It is the person doing the waiting that is responsible for that. You want a good tip? Than do a good job. If you do a shitty job than guess what? You get a shitty tip. You can complain all you want at me, you can call me names, but you won't change my mind on this. You have to earn a tip with good service, you shouldn't be expecting one just because you brought me my food.
And for that I am truly sorry. It's people like the ones you described that cause people like me to be looked at as the bad guy also.
Have you been to a country where the servers don't rely on tips? Spain for example has this system and it sucks. The service is awful. Awful. If something like that started here in the states, people would FLIP. OUT. So, sure, it's nice to say "I'm not responsible for paying you well, that's your employers job." and it has some truth, but in reality, imagine how bad the service would be if that were to happen. :)
The service is only awful to you because you're American and are used to having a waitress pop up every ten minutes to ask what you need. In Spain, waiters and waitresses actually think it's rude to bother people like that during their meal.

Your restaurant doesn't add gratuity for parties of 8 or more? Most do, and this is why.
If you have ever worked in the restaurant industry, you'd realize this is a FML. No one deserves to get stiffed on a tip, especially for a party of 13. But like #3, why wasn't there gratuity added in?
