You could have stopped, walked your bike around the ladder, then continued.
'Today, while riding my bike on the sidewalk' I clicked Y.D.I at this point. Cycling on the pavement (sidewalk) is illegal in most countries. Pavements are for pedestrians and those buggy things that old people drive.
You deserved it for riding on the pavement; you should have been on the road. You should also have done a shoulder check and clearly signalled your intention to merge onto the road. Idiot.
