Today, while working at Dairy Queen, a customer asked me what was so special about our ice cream cakes, and how they're different from regular cakes. I chuckled, and told her it's because they're made from ice cream. She threw a fit, which resulted in me being written up and sent home early. FML

We don't get paid enough to put up with shit like that.

The customer is always an a******. I never make my associates deal with people like that. I put up with their shit myself.

I don't know who's worse: The idiot customer who gets upset when her question is answered or the boss who yells at his/her employee for politely answering a question.

I feel your pain. I worked at Dairy Queen myself. It would be a lot better if we could just smack the crap out of people.

I work at a place where people ask stupid questions too. She probably thought you chuckling was at her and not her question. Sorry you got written up. I love Dairy Queen. Such good burgers. Good luck in the future. Sometimes when someone asks me a question that is terribly simple I'll ask them what they mean like compared to other ice cream cakes or regular cakes. Make them explain their question.

Agreed. I have a rule of thumb when dealing with customers: ALWAYS assume your customer has no idea what they want. Whether it's a new face or a regular, it doesn't matter. In addition, you've had experience working with that establishment, so you're naturally going to know better about how things run or what questions need to be asked to be able to complete an order. With customer service most of the time, you can't take a question or request they have at face value; nine times out of ten, they'll leave details out, and you have to coax them out of the customer. It's always good to ask questions, get more information, and reiterate to them that what you've prepared is what they asked for. At least this will help take care of customers that are willing to cooperate with you. Of course, there will always be that customer that makes taking an order as difficult as wrestling a gorilla and won't accept what you've prepared, even after walking them through the ordering process. Those customers are just there to ruin your day.

Wait.... You mean.... Ice cream cakes are actually made from ice cream?? But they're cakes. I'm so confused! So are cupcakes made from cups?? Are angel food cakes made from angels?!?!? Oh god, then what are lady fingers made from!?!?? I'm scared!!! FYL OP!! Your manager maybe could've punished you in front of her, then in the next room laugh at the idiotic customer.

Unfortunately, first rule of good customer service is "Never laugh at stupid questions.". Never assume anyone has an IQ above a Kindergartner. Or the temperament.

Honestly, you deserve it. We all know the never laugh at stupid questions rule. You gave an idiotic chuckle followed by an idiotic response. The woman may not have known what an icecream cake was, it's common. Honestly I just went to a diner that was run by my school's dining service, and I had no idea if I was supposed to tip or not (since we don't type in traditional dining halls) so I asked. The lady I asked might've thought I was stupid, inexperienced, etc. but I did have a reason (an overthought reason but a reason) as to why I asked such a question I knew was traditionally stupid. And we're not 100% the whole time anyways. We've all forgotten things, had complete blanks, the logic that connects for most people doesn't make the connection in our head, etc. And the people that say "i would've made fun of her to her face" and such, five bucks you're unemployed and will stay unemployed for a lot longer.

It's common to not know what an "ICECREAM" cake is? lol, If that's common that means the common person is pretty damn stupid.

I agree with #84. I mean, in America, most people know what DQ is, and what an ice cream cake is... And if the customer didn't know what an ice cream cake was, it's pretty easy to figure out by the name. It's not a big mystery. If the customer didn't want to seem stupid, she should've asked what's in the ice cream cake besides ice cream. And just in case you were wondering, Dairy Queen is an ice cream based fast food restaurant. I just don't understand why anyone thinks this OP deserves it. Most of us would laugh or giggle if someone came into an ice cream place and asked what's in an ice cream cake. That's like going into KFC and asking 'what's fried chicken?'

I should add that most *normal* people with an ounce of common sense would laugh or giggle.

Did she get angry because you chuckled?

You working @ Dairy Queen was enough for me to give you the FML stamp of approval lol
