If you tried to sound 'British' by talking posh, that's a big rookie mistake. We ain't posh!
I am actually English, however, the mix of English parents and American friends (I live in America) has caused me to have a strange combination of both, so I sound like an American doing a really bad English accent, so whenever I meet someone new, they always think I'm faking it. Its a real pain in the ass to explain.
So, in your attempt to seem cool, you managed to offend and/or annoy him. Have fun with the embarrassing experience of walking by him any time you go to that theatre from now on.
