Today, I decided to upgrade to Windows 10. I wanted to keep my old files on the current hard drive, I clicked on the keep old files option. Thanks to Windows, I lost everything. FML

YOU HAVEN'T LOST EVERYTHING!!! in events like this Windows creates a backup. you'll find ALL your files in the "windows.old" folder. just search it up!!!

Don't trust them when it says it'll retain your old files, you need to always back up your files before upgrading or changing your OS. Sometimes Windows is nice enough to put your files in a folder on the Windows drive called "windows.old" which would be where everything you had on that drive before would be saved. However I don't know if they kept that feature in Windows 10.

I mean, if you're programming Linux is the superior os, and programmers are generally intelligent

Yeah however to the common fool it is bad they would prefer a much larger corporation to make and monitor you OS.

And since OP didn't back up all their files before doing the upgrade, they're obviously not intelligent and therefore shouldn't use Linux.

@101, a decent response. I can accept my defeat with a comment like yours. :)

There are more friendly Linux distros by now that just work out of the box. It's not like you have to use the terminal for everything anymore (even if it is faster).

Highly unnecessary. Not everyone has your supposed common sense there buddy.

Name calling isn't necessary, but common sense isn't common. In this day and age, everyone knows to back up to an external hard drive before updating your OS.

And here children, we have your everyday internet troll. While typically harmless they do tend to be an annoyance.

Obviously not everybody :-( Flash thumb drives work well as well as knowing enuf to initially create a second partition for said personal documents & even installation/ setup files for non-Windows apps.

they do have it. my installation was in another language for whatever reason and because of that I screwed up the install, but I got everything I needed from that folder

When I updated to Windows 10 I didn't have to do this and it's been fine...

You need to back up your files off of your computer, but now you know that.

Funny thing is it even tells you to back up your files just in case things go wrong.

Don't you hate it Windows damn technology devices don't work the way they're supposed to...what a pane in the ass.

I can almost believe that term was chosen on purpose. Windows pain and window panes.

Tried a bit too hard to get that pun off...

You're right, in fact the windows 10 upgrade keeps everything in the windows drive by default so that you can roll back to windows 7 or 8.1 (whichever you had) within 30 days.

You can also always use a program like Parted Magic, as long as you didn't overwrite the 1's and 0's. Most formatting options don't do this, they just keep the old files (which are 1's and 0's) and rewrite them over time, to give you your memory back.

Definitly check windows.old and while you're at it make sure you need with the privacy settings too! I've never seen such an invasive os. Don't get me wrong, still loving it! Just gotta make sure it's not accessing your: microphone, video camera, calendar, your contacts, apps that use feedback, or keeps other apps running in the background like: calendar, photos, one drive, Xbox, alarm clock.... Etc

You could use recovery program called Recuva.

that wont work since he upgraded the OS

I work at a computer repair shop, and recuva doesn't work great for deleted files, but there are some free programs that do. if you want them, shoot me a message.

I voted YDI on this too. I'm so surprised at the amount of people that don't think to back up their important things on a computer

I'm amazed that people don't backup EVERYTHING. I hope the new version of Windows comes with automagic snapshot backup software.

same thing happened to me, then I didn't even get windows 10
