Today, at my mother's funeral, as everyone was around her casket for the viewing, my 5-year-old son in cluelessness of what was going on shouted, "Grandma is more fun when she isn't sleeping." Everyone cried. FML

Oh my goodness... This has to have broken your heart. I'm so sorry, i'm speachless

Kids are so honest... your son is definitely correct when he says that his grandma is more fun when she isn't sleeping. Sorry for your loss OP!

This FML probably wins the Saddest FML Ever award. :( but am I alone in thinking you shouldn't bring a small child to a funeral?

19, no. Death is a natural thing, why hide it from kids. Especially if it was a close family member like that is. But if the parents of the kid think they can cope with it, and it seems like it will help them understand then go for it. Who are we to judge!

18, I think if you decide to bring a kid to a funeral you should probably try to explain the concept of death to them.

Every child is different, some can handle being at a funeral, some can't.

18 it's based off how well ye parents teaches the child about death. Op should of explained grandmas death a little better. Also, have her child watch the lion king or Bambi and explain the death sense to him for better understanding.

This is the first FML I've read that has actually made me tear up, sorry for your loss op. I disagree that you shouldn't take children to a funeral if it is a close family member. I was 5 when my grandpa passed, and even though I didn't understand completely at the time, I now know that I got to say my last goodbye.

#1, aw, you're so sweet. By the time you got to the end of your comment, you were so distraught that your capitalization and spelling failed you. Cheer up, there's always a chance that the story is made up, or at least embellished.

Of course, that's what you'll focus on, Perdix. 18, I was raising a child and when grandpa died, he kept asking about when he could see him. I told him that grandpa was up in the stars and eventually everyone goes there. He understood that he couldn't see grandpa anymore. However, I didn't have him attend the funeral seeing as he just turned 3.

When we went to my grandmas funeral, we took my 5 year old nephew with us. He was quiet the whole time. Never acted up or anything. He knew what happened. Death shouldn't be withheld

18- i have to disagree. My mom passed when i was 5. I did not get to go to the funeral. Im not mad about it, but i just wish i have one more thing to remember about her, no matter how sad

So very sorry for your loss, OP.

This is one FML that seriously crushed me.

This is probably the saddest FML ever to be published. I'm tearing up.

I can't even bring myself to say something along the lines of "How are you not able to imagine? It's easy." This FML is just to sad for jokes

Oh, the innocence of youth. At least it wasn't anything rude.

What a cute kid, I feel sorry for both of you. And that it sucks that he doesn't fully understand :(

I'm sorry for your loss OP. Your son is damn right in his opinion..

At least he didn't say something along the lines of 'grandma is way better when she's not talking' or anything involving poking/prodding of her... Assuming it was an open casket. My condolences though. It's hard losing your mum.

It's pretty hard to have a viewing with a closed casket!

No, it's not. You still go up to the casket and pay your respects.

10, there are times when it can't be an open casket, but there's still a viewing.
