Today, after spending two weeks renovating my room and $1000 on paint and a new floor, my landlord told me that he's sold the house. Also, he was kind enough to inform me that unless I paint the walls back to white, I won't be getting my $500 deposit back. FML

And that's why you don't Reno a rental property.

YDI for spending your $ to re-do a property that is not even yours.

$1000 on paint for a room? was the paint liquid gold or something

ops my bad "and floor", well YDI for having a $1000 to spend

The OP said it was the landlord who spent the money and did the renovations. She probably just has bad grammar, though.

Uh, yes. I presume that's not what she meant to say. But that's what she *said.*

No, she didn't. Saying someone else might "have bad grammar", while it is very clear that it is in fact you who sucks at it. FAIL. "after spending two weeks renovating my room and $1000 on paint and a new floor"

Definately agree with #2 you could have saved that money for a new place!

Yeah, because a new place is only $1000. /sarcasm

exactly, never make improvements to a place you don't own.

Dang that freakin sucks. But yea why would you pay for all that instead of telling the landlord to do it. Especially on new floors

Why would you do anything without running it by the landlord first?

You gave that ****** new floors and he still makes you paint the wall back? Granted it was unauthorized, but you think the landlord would be a bit nicer. You know, give you a bit extra on deposit or something.

It says OP put new flooring in only her room. Now owner is going to have to spend time and money to make the flooring in that room match the rest of the flooring in the house. She should count herself lucky the owner is offering to return any of her deposit.

Well, the amount of paint used etc, $500 wouldn't be worth it.

It doesn't say anywhere it was unauthorised.

free2speak 14

if it was authorized, owner wouldn't be asking her to paint the walls white to get the deposit back. And on that note, it doesn't say anywhere that it was authorized.

I think you'll come out better letting the landlord paint it

YDI for renovate rented Stuff, but still sucks tho

it's cheaper/less effort not to get your deposit back. and don't renovate rented stuff!!!!!

YDI for renovating rented space, especially because it sounds like you didn't ask first.
