Today, I'm very ill. My throat and glands are so swollen that whenever I fall asleep, I relax too much and cut off my own air. The doctor said it's a viral infection and there's nothing they can give me, so I can choose between trying to kill myself by sleeping or staying awake for the next few days. FML

I feel you should've consulted another doctor for a different opinion. Still, FYL.

Just go to sleep, the second your throat closes, you will automatically wake up. And if this were truly life or death, you'd be in a hospital, lol.

I have had problems wit breathing and my throat...but not that bad haha

Omfg! The exact same kind of infection just happened to me! I hope you feel better, cause it does suck. It should go away by the end of the week. :)

That happened to me when I had pneumonia. I'd jerk awake every time I hit sleep because my lungs would stop breathing. It's a horrible feeling :(

Btw what I had wasn't Mono, so it might not be for OP

OP. Is it a herpes viral infection?

or, instead of staying awake forever, you can sleep sitting up. It doesn't matter how "relaxed" you are, you aren't sitting there with tense neck muscles, when you fall asleep you are (assumedly) laying down, so its gravity that is trying to suffocate you. Just sleep sitting up.

Sounds like you need to get a new doctor. Sure, there's nothing they can give you to treat the viral infection itself, but they should be able to give you something to make the swelling go down. Every time I've gone to the doctor for a flu or something, they always prescribed me something to help with the symptoms so I wasn't quite so miserable in the week or so it took for my body to fight off the virus.
