Today, I called my mother to hear how my dog was doing, because she had been taking care of her while I was moving. My mom told me she had put her down a couple of days ago, cause she was sick. FML

follow up a few years later. i was so hurt the day I wrote this, and i still haven't forgiven my mom for this. I've tried to talk to her about it, but ive never even got an apology. She put my dog down, because she found a autoimmune condition that caused my dog not to have any blood left. and the vet knew my mom, plus on paper my mom owned her, even though she had been living with me since I moved out 7 years earlier. it wasn't the wrong decision, i just wish I knew so I could say goodbye to the pet i loved above everything in my life.

check the local shelter she might have just dropped it off

What a rotten thing to do. That wasn't her place to make that decision. I'm very sorry for your loss. However, I agree with the other comment about checking local shelters.

you can probably sue the vet who did it

Why do you think that’s an appropriate thing to do? If somebody brings a dog to a clinic and claims they are their pet, then vets assume that’s true and will present options to the owner. If the owner elects euthanasia for their sick pet, they sure as shit aren’t thinking it’s somebody else’s dog.

If my mother had done something like this I would be going absolutely nuts. Murder definitely would go through my mind. I’m so sorry that you have to deal with this! It’s absolutely horrific.

I’m so sorry! Please do not blame the vet (as others have suggested). I guarantee your mom didn’t say that there was a different owner and she probably claimed the dog as her own. The vet wouldn’t have any way of knowing the dog wasn’t hers to make serious medical decisions about.

I get it, but I would never speak to her again for not waiting for me to confirm the decision and mostly not letting me be there holding my baby. so sorry for you.

I’m so sorry. I can’t imagine the hurt you must still feel.
