What the **** is the point of pressing both. This is obviously an FYL, it's not even really debatable
Well, addiction does have genetic factors, some people are more prone to it than others, sounds like your brother inherited it from dad's side. Knowing that might be actually a boon, because it will be something to stem off some of the self loathing at what he might see as weakness, but it also might be used as an excuse not to try to break the addiction.

Sounds like there's many an intervention to be had
Get some support for yourselves too - it is SO SO hard to be the family or loved one of someone with an addiction. There are family support groups and helplines out there.
