This is easy, if the time off was approved, just go anyway. Tell him that he doesn't own you. File a report with your hr department. This scenario is an easy fix.

Over here, an employer has every right to withdraw approval on any vacation. But they DO have to reimburse you 100% for any costs. Not sure about Australia though.
