Today, one of my regulars approached me at work, arms extended for a hug. He's always in a bad mood, so I figured for once he wasn't grumpy and I enthusiastically hugged him. Turns out he was just stretching his arms. He told me I was crazy and pretty much ran out of my store. FML

For all the people who think this is strange you have to understand hes been a regular at my store for 2 years. Its not like it was some random person. Hes so depressed and angry every time, so when I finally saw him for once not looking upset and like he wanted a hug I went for it. Silly mistake on my part but what can I say I always hope for the best in people. He came back today and apologized. See a friendly hug goes a long way. So you negative people need a hug.

Actually, OP doesn't realise it but she probably seriously brightened that guy's day. He sounds like the sort of guy who's only grumpy all the time because that's how he wants to act and is always find an excuse to, so by hugging him she brought him down to reality and showed that people are actual nice to be around.

I think the grumpy guy is more awkward in this case. In my opinion, OP was being friendly, and accepting the hug that she thought the grumpy guy was giving him. It was an awkward situation for both of them, but we shouldn't assume that OP is always socially awkward.

Why would you want a hug from some random person? I'd think it a tad strange if Simone gave me a hug. I wouldn't go running out but I'd find it awkward afterwards.

Usually, one asks another if that another needs hug in situations like that. In my school, "touching longer than two seconds" is considered pda.

Yeah, but OP lives in the real world where hugging for two seconds doesn't equal sneaking off to have sex in the janitor's closet. My school was pretty strict about PDA too and I thought it was ridiculous, especially after growing up and spending the first ten years of my school career in Germany. I never even heard of PDA until I moved to the US.
