Had something like this happening between myself and a guy friend in college. I finally asked him why he did romantic things for me all the time (and yes, he did them often... left flowers randomly in my dorm room, mixed CDs, would ask me to sing/play guitar for him, was really invested in reading my poetry and hearing me read aloud, asked me to meet him for secret adventures and to model for photographs, etc.) his response? "I'm not into you like that... but I do those things because I know you would like and appreciate them." Basically, he saw it as sharing beautiful things, and didn't connect that maybe a girl doesn't want to experience all her big romantic moments with a guy that has no interest in dating her.
