That should actually be fine, you just smother your thumb quickly before the fuel has a chance to burn off and start burning your thumb, and you'll be fine. People actually do this with alcohol for tricks
This is what happens when you play with your lighter. Be thankful you only burned you thumb and didn’t burn down your house or blow up your car.

I refilled a wick type lighter for the first time the other day, and one of my biggest concerns was getting fluid on my fingers and desk, and then accidentally setting them on fire. So I used a wet wipe to clean my hands, the desk, and the outside of the lighter for good measure before test firing. The fire was contained to the wick where it belongs.
