Perhaps because the OPs friend lives far away and international calls are very expensive? Don't try to be presumptuous and on some kind of moral-pedestal when you don't know the full scope of the situation. A logical person would assume that since the OP's friend brought it up on MSN - and didn't call the OP - that must be their major means of communication.
