Today, an elderly woman was crossing the street and dropped her bag of groceries. I got out of my car to assist her, but she beat me repeatedly, yelling that I was "enforcing a stereotype". Sorry for trying to help. FML

I_AM_READING tells us more.

OP here... I have no idea why she hit me instead of asking me not to help and still haven't a clue as to what stereotype it was. I was waiting for my father to come out of the store when I noticed her crossing the street when she just dropped the bags I came to help and she swung whatever was left in the bag at me till I left. I lucky didn't get hurt but I was kinda humiliated but as far as I could tell no one saw. I got a laugh telling my friends at school though so either way it just another funny story to tell.

Some people just don't like help they didn't ask for...I can understand that but she didn't have to be rude. Sorry OP I would have done just what you had done.

Independence and pride are all they have.

Next time, just politely ask (out of broomstick range) if the person needs help. That way, if they don't and are mean, you're at least out of range of physical abuse, if not out of earshot.

You should have retaliated for her enforcing stereotype of an old grumpy bitch.

I ******* hate people these days.

I guess you can't be decent to the elderly anymore. Noted.

At least you're not H2O Delirious? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kxOJXty0M7M Around 6:00 to get the joke

I'm sorry, I'm lost here. What is this stereotype?

OP, what ethnicity are you? because I'm assuming that she may not have thought you were helping, and you were trying to steal her stuff. hence a stereotype varying on your race. Dunno. that's what I was thinking.

I don't know she hit you either..Maybe it's because she is a strong independent old woman who needs nobody's help.. but at least you got a laugh out of it!

until she falls over and breaks a hip. “I'd call an ambulance for you, but since you don't want help I'm just going to watch you drag yourself to your phone and wait for “I've fallen and get up.””

I could be the little old lady stereotype. always need help yadda yadda. My grandmother is like, that doesn't want help.

I think that the stereotype was that all older people need help with everything

#60 I am both white and Asian. Also thanks to anyone who helped point out the stereotype I don't know why it took my so long to notice.

She hit OP for enforcing the stereotype that old people can't do things on their own and require assistance, highly doubt it had anything to do with race.
