I'm from southern Indiana in the US. When something ***** the bed it means something malfunctioned or something went horribly wrong. And, believe me, horrible is and understatement. I had to wear a respirator while I cleaned this up!

I think it's a southern USA setting. For what I've read, it comes from the fact that a persons bowels release on death, and that they were in their deathbed already. So they shit the (death) bed. But it can also refer to a major failure in an object, coming back to the ******** in the bed due to some sort of illness or lack of muscle control. In short- "shit the bed" means broken.

"Shit the Bed" is a very common phrase here in New Zealand (Australia too I believe). It basically just means it broke down (spectacularly).
