Today, I helped a stranger exchange 3,000 Argentinian pesos for US dollars through my bank. They gave him $3,000. The exchange rate is close to $195. My bank realized their mistake and now my bank account is -$2,805 expecting me to pay it back. All this happened before my recent paycheck came in. FML

Which bank is this and are you fighting it? Considering they made the mistake?

Something is missing here.... How would it be legal for an FDIC insured bank to hold you responsible?

Why did you help a stranger? good grief I would have at least looked up the rate. my question is how much did you get for helping? Reminds me of the old coin swap scam. Guy walks up says he found these rare coins can you call this number? the guy looks homeless you call the guy on the other end says give the guy money and bring the coins to him since he will ask you what the guy looks, like. happens in casinos too. Hate to say I know cause I have family who would pull scams

Don't worry about it. If you give me your bank account info, I'll put tens of millions of dollars into your account and I'll let you have $2.5 million for helping out another stranger. You're so nice!

Deposit insurance prevents you from losing your own deposits if the bank fails. It doesn't relate at all to errors or fraud.

There must be something missing in this story, it does not add up. Did you deposit a check for the amount of 3000 dollars in your account and that check turned out fake? That would make more sense that the bank would charge you for that . And why would you do that through your bank? In the US there are basically exchange offices for tourists on every corner, you should have sent him there.

Are you sure he wasn't a Nigerian prince?

So the bank did a normal currency conversion and screwed up the exchange rate, then took money out of YOUR account to cover their screw up and expect you to pay it back, simply because you were helping the other person out? What the shit...

That's why you don't help strangers launder their money.

Any time you open an account you sign basically a waiver. It it says you will hold the bank harmless for any mistakes it makes. Unfortunately this makes you responsible when the bank makes a mistake like this.

They might require you to have a bank account to do a currency exchange and OP let the stranger run it through his account.
