Some of us older folks remember being young, and remember that from a young persons perspective us older folks occupy the thin line between invisible and repulsive. Others, apparently, not so much.

Probably because it would have been even more awkward in public. Best to contain the damage without the public humiliation of other people listening in, at least... For some reason, I am getting a feeling being in public wouldn't have stopped them from asking.
