Today, I was prank called yet again by someone asking for a game that was released over 10 years ago. The store I work at only sells modern titles, and I angrily slammed the phone down. My boss saw and fired me on the spot. FML

Hi everyone, OP here. The game they were asking for, was, yes, Battletoads. Just another prank call. Many of you assume that the guy on the other end could have called me legitimately asking for the game, but really, it was the same person each and every time. They were just trying to be a jerk. Hell, you could hear their friends laughing in the background of the call. Yes, I understand that it isn't right to behave like this in the workplace, but I was a bit stressed out (girlfriend breaking up with me, etc.) and I didn't really feel great that day. After some explaining to the boss about the whole Battletoads prank call phenomenon, I was rehired and just took a 3 day suspension. I promise you all that I will not behave in such a way ever again, and thank you all for your wonderful comments.

Well, you do need to have self-control in the workplace, but that shouldn't be a firing offense

That was really unprofessional of you OP, regardless of whether or not they were prank calling you. You don't hang up on people while they are asking for information. I honestly would of fired you right on the spot as well. Control your temper next time.

It doesn't actually say that the OP hung up on them while they were asking for information. It just says he angrily slammed down the phone. It's possible that he answered all the questions asked and slammed the phone down in anger at the end of the call have just had their time wasted.

That's actually what happened. Kudos, sir :)

Except that this happens ALL THE TIME!!! It's a stupid prank. I knew exactly what game OP was talking about since I worked at GameStop. And when I say all the time, I mean at least once a day. Battletoads was released OVER 20 YEARS AGO!!! There hasn't been a new game since 1994. Know what you are talking about before you are quick to judge. And FYI, at my GameStop, the managers told me to hang up on prank callers. I once had a kid call me up screaming something about how his brother killed himself because we sold his preorder. It's pretty bad what people come up with.

Frequent calls for Battletoads is one of the pitfalls of working at a game store.

I worked retail for seven years, so I feel your pain. On the other hand, as a representative of the store you're expected to be professional at all times. I've been called a bitch, had things thrown at me, had a very creepy customer that wouldn't stop asking me very personal questions, and I never once lost my cool. I never had to be written up for unprofessional behavior. The closest I ever came was when a customer on the phone couldn't understand that, no, I don't work for the movie theater and no, I don't know when the showtimes are or what's showing, and no, I won't cross an incredibly busy highway on foot while at work just to find out the times for you. Even then, I still didn't lose my cool. I just told her I had a line forming and I had to hang up. Had I ever been caught behaving as you did, I would no doubt have been at the very least written up. I probably wouldn't have been fired because I would have been given a chance to explain, but I would have been sent home for the day and been forced to explain to the general manager of the store and not just my department manager.

I agree you have to act professional at your job! once I worked at a fudge shop, and I had a guy literally yelling and swearing at me because his fudge didn't weigh exactly one pound... I still feel proud of myself for my patience with that asshole...

I don't think he deserves a YDI.

Having worked retail, a person asking for a 10 year old product sounds more like an idiot than a prank caller.

Not in the video game world, necessarily.

If you have ever heard of a place called Frank and Sons, in California, they make a living off selling old video games and merchandise.

Okay it's an older game...just get one off eBay or amazon and sell it to him simple as that...I have done that before...or just recommend a different store or something...

That's exactly what I did... I recommended LukieGames and Amazon, as well as other retailers in the area.

This reminds me of,"is this the Krusty Krab?""No! THIS IS PATRICK!"

could have been a genuine question, no need to slam things... the game store down my road sells Nintendo games lol, and I own a Nintendo, Dreamcast, psone, xbox, xbox 360, ps3, and an ouya so it could have been someone cool like me :p

Someone cool who goes online and tells people all the systems they own?

my boyfriend is really into video games so he has to have them all, I was trying to point out that people still have older gaming systems and just because they asked for an older game doesn't mean they were trolling

Maybe it wasn't a prank call and they thought you could get in older stuff... YDI for being unprofessional and annoyed over a silly phone call.
