Today, I was threatened with eviction over $6.25. They waited three days to tell me and left me one business day to get it done. Six fucking dollars and 25 goddamn cents. FML

Wow. So many trolls. I'm the author, forgot to sign in when I posted it. First, I live in Northern Virginia, not DC, although I'm not far from it. There aren't people banging on the door to get in here, though. Second, it's an apartment complex so no bank or mortgage involved. Third, I had been sick in the hospital for most of the past 3 weeks. So my rent was 2 days late due to illness. I paid the late fee of $200 dollars without a complaint. (Most late fees are only $50 in comparison.) I simply misread the amount of the late fee. The $6.25 seemed to be an admin fee of sorts. They absolutely had the power to cut me some slack since it's such a small amount. It's just a poorly run office. Fourth, VA isn't very nice to renters as a rule. They absolutely could've gone to the courthouse and gotten a '5 day pay or quit' notice. Which means if I didn't pay, on day 6 a sheriff's deputy would have showed up at my door and forcibly removed me, my daughter and our belongings. As an aside, homeowners in VA who get evicted are given about a week, not 30-60 days to move. Fifth, I desperately wanted to pay it in pennies. But they wouldn't even accept a personal check. It had to be a cashiers check or money order. So yes, I had to drive crosstown to the Walmart with the working money order machine and pay an additional 70 cents for a money order. Finally, when I turned in my rent + $200 late fee the man behind the desk made me wait while he opened the envelope and checked to see if the amount was correct. He told me it was fine so I thanked him for his time and left, thinking all was okay. They waited until 3 full days later to tell me about the 6.25, never admitting that the guy behind the desk had given me the wrong information and told me everything was okay, when it clearly wasn't. I had one business day to get it handled and I had a lot of important stuff going on that I had to put on hold bc of their incompetence. And yes, I will be writing to the higher ups to complain about it. To the poster who asked, I think I will write my next rent check in ******* dollars and goddamn cents. To all the trolls saying I'm trying to take advantage, I sincerely hope you never make an honest mistake after being sick in the hospital for 3 weeks.

In most states they have to give you 30-90 days before they can officially evict you so don't sweat it and pay the $6.25 in pennies

I'd really be worried if they wanted tree fitty you'll be alright

Maybe you should pay your bills. Threatening to evict you was the only way they could get you to see the issue seriously and pay what you owe. You deserved it.

clearly rent isnt only $6.25, so OP paid most. And its not about having to pay, its about having one day to do so when it was possible to know sooner.

I'd have to wonder why you were 6.25 short of rent in the first place. Being a landlord myself, I know you can't let tenants walk over you. The odd bad tenant ruins it for everyone

Couldn't possibly be due to the fact that the costs of living are so high these days that many people have a hard time paying the full amount at once. That wouldn't make sense at all, right? Or, you know, clerical errors resulting in part of the payment going missing. Which is unlikely, but not impossible. It's happened. I get that you have a fair point, but you have to consider that there are fair points on OP's end as well. And regardless of WHY they were short, the fact that they were given one day to pay it or get kicked out when the people notifying them could have said something much sooner is ridiculous.

Perhaps the OP isn't on a lease and they recently upped the rent. In that case, maybe they failed to notify OP, or OP simply forgot after paying a set amount for so long.

It's ridiculous that they would wait that long to tell you, and give you such an imminent deadline to meet. I'd recommend going over their heads; find out who they answer to and tell them about this situation. Tell them you were not given fair notice about the missing balance or the eviction. Maybe they can help sort things out. And as someone before me said, generally they have to give you at least a month to move out. If you can get the balance paid and contact someone higher up within that time, you should be able to work things out and keep your home.

Well why do you still owe six ******* dollars and 25 goddamn cents?

Why are you complaining? Grow up. You didnt pay your bill in full and youre blaming them?

Why are people being such assholes? You guys DO realize people can make mistakes right?! My dad forgot to put in 60 damn cents when paying a bill and his power got shut down without warning. You can also read it wrong. It's obvious that he has the money to pay the full bill!

I have $45 f***ing dollars owning to my landlord, for an NSF fee... Even though I paid my rent three days early, with cash.

Not rude. Just pay the bill. That's how it works. Pay the bills, no problems.

I'm sorry to hear about your illness. I hope you are feeling better. Maybe enroll in the autopay system (if your apartment has it) so that this situation won't happen again especially if your illness is persistent or reoccurring.

I am feeling better thanks, and it's unfortunately a recurring illness. Also unfortunately, the complex doesn't have auto pay or even online payment. It always has to be a physical check.

Ugh that is so inconvenient. NoVa and DC apartments should do better with technology considering the astronomical prices for living spaces. I'm sorry my dear. Stay well. :)

Jeez, remind me to never move to Virginia.

I live in Northern Virginia as well. There is a huge demand for apartments out here, it is very expensive, and renters have very few rights. I'm sorry you had this experience lululand315.

Geez, OP, I am so sorry to hear that. I recommend you leave a very poor review online detailing your whole experience. I've searched online for places to live in the past, and reviews of living places have been make-or-break decision influencers for me. I'm sure they are for others as well. If you google your complex's address, you'll find the most common websites it comes up on. Go to town informing people of this issue and the others I'm sure you must've had to deal with if the office is that incompetent. And the higher ups would probably notice, as most places care a whole lot about their online reviews. Very sorry also about your ongoing illness...truly wishing the best for you, and your daughter!

I live in NOVA to and anything regarding homeowning/renting in atrocious.

I know how you feel OP. I live in northern Virginia too and I just was dragged to court for costs that weren't even my fault to begin with.

I live right over the border in West Virginia along I81 and it isn't any better here... The "legitimate" real estate agency that takes care of the rental property I live in is currently running operations out of someone's basement... And has lost 3 rent checks that have been mailed using certified mail. Which means they physically have to sign for the envelope. And they've lost 3 of them...

This sounds appalling. Most places have a grace period (at least my building does) of at least a week. That you were in the hospital for three weeks should be enough for a manager who isn't a total asshole to cut you some slack, assuming you haven't had problems being late with your rent before. And thank you for giving me extra incentive never to live in Virginia. DC may have its problems, but it could be worse.

Just gonna throw this out there. Anyone consider that rent could've been raised recently and op simply had a brain fart when they payed rent?
