Today, I went out to dinner for my mom's birthday. I'd planned for a nice restaurant which is always packed, so I'd called for a reservation. When we got there, the hostess tried to turn us down because no one ever takes their mother out to dinner anymore, and that I was a fraud. FML

OP here. We eventually got into the restaurant with our original reservations, after contacting management. My mother and I tried to not let the hostess spoil the night. The rest of the staff was wonderful and I don't think we'll be seeing much more of that hostess for a long time.

Obviously she just said that because she doesn't treat her mother as nicely! Good for you,OP, I bet your mom was really happy! ^^,

I'm guessing "tried" means you got in eventually? Follow up!

Dear OP, please give us a follow up. I feel sad about people like her, no matter her real reasoning - either she did think you were a fraud or she got money to let other people in your table -, her attitude it's unacceptable. I hope you talked to the manager and was able to give your mom a great time on her birthday.

reservations goes by name not with whom you come to restaurant...the hostess is mindless.

Maybe she's just mad nobody's taking her out to dinner…

this sounds like a blatant lie!

Wow you should have asked for a manager. I work in the restaurant industry and if I had said something like that to a customer I probably would get fired.

she probably just forgot the reservation and wanted to pawn it off on you

Even if that wasn't your mum, you were still a paying customer...

That hostess should be fired. It is not her place to judge the guests incoming, regardless of her ideas. The only refusal she has a right to make is if the restaurant has an established, official, on-paper dress code - and you don't meet it. Or they have a policy against waitlisting tables.

What does that even mean? I don't understand. What is she taking about?
