Today, my boss made up a rumor that I was quitting my job so I wouldn't get the promotion that was coming up. There goes that raise I've been wanting for six months. FML

If there's an HR department to take it up with, then make sure you do. That is not acceptable behavior from your boss. Good luck OP. Sometimes the worst people end up in management.

wow some people are so full of shit! sorry op I hope you get that promotion you deserve it.

Wow Talk about A Horrible Boss ! Definitely consult your HR unit to resolve this matter & if necessary sue, the fact your boss thinks he could pull a stunt like this is absolutely Ludacris, get that promotion you deserve OP show him whose really BOSS

I'm almost positive that you can go to HR about that.

Before you go shouting about it, do you work for an "at will" company? If your manager has friends in the company you could end up being let go without ever making an enquiry. Do your research then decide, fight or flight.

Research is always good -- but if the manager had friends in the company involved with hiring and firing, they probably wouldn't have felt a need to resort to rumors to prevent a promotion.

I would take that to HR immediately. I'm sorry this happened to you. Good luck

That doesn't make sense he's the boss he can simply deny your promotion he doesn't need to start rumors.

The manager may not be a hiring-and-firing-level boss. Different companies have different internal policies, but not all managers have much or any direct say in whether people they manage get promoted, especially if the promotion would be to a different department.

I'd honestly start looking for another job.
