Today, on my daughter's 9th birthday, I have to let her know that her dog died in his sleep overnight. Happy birthday. FML

OP here -- we told her. We didn't have a choice. She was devastated and will be for some time. She's spent considerable time at farms, so she gets the whole cycle-of-life thing but it's different when there is an emotional connection. There won't be any dogs in the near future. Maybe in the spring we can talk about adopting a rescue dog.

What? On practically the same day her dog died? Most people grieve for a while before they just up and get a new dog/pet.

She's 9, she's going to notice her dog is missing.

Actually, that's one happy dog, I must tell you.

Hope your ok, sorry about the loss of your dog

My heart breaks for her. I had a puppy that died on my 13th birthday. It really takes the fun out of a birthday. I'm sorry.

That is so sad, my heart goes out to you and your daughter, but think of the joy a new puppy would bring! It's also a good lesson on the circle of life - I hope you're all able to find a way to enjoy the day

Same thing happened to me on my birthday when I was 10 except it was my cat. I was so confused so please explain this to her!

try considering an older dog! once dogs are no longer puppies people aren't as interested in adopting them and are often euthanized. it would be awesome to give a dog who needs the love a great home like I'm sure yours is :)

I am so sorry for your loss OP. A dog can be like part of the family and it is sad to have to say goodbye, especially at a young age and on her birthday.

I'm so sorry about your loss. I know exactly how your daughter feels (and you too). My dog who I had since I was 7 passed away almost 3 months ago. She was really sick and had to be put down. She was 16 and my best friend. I miss her so much

Don't do it!!! Say you took the dog to a Dog camp for a few days... anything. This is something she will always remember & associate with her birthday.

That's a bad idea. It's horrible dealing with a loss on such a special day to her, but it if he lied to her? She would never forgive him. It's just best to tell her the truth then just let things past.

Sounds like a trip to the petshop might be underway
