I agree your life sucks because you didn't know and the outcome, but you kind of deserve it for making the joke in the first place. Probably shouldn't be making jokes with strangers over the phone.

I have to say, I don't see anything good possibly coming out of your comment, in any situation. Obviously you didn't think about her being dead, but what other options are there? either he actually is as controlling as you "jokingly" implied, or he had a huge fight with her or something and is getting revenge. I can't imagine your comment being appreciated either way... that's not to say I've never said dumb/offensive things accidentally myself :P
What if she asked him to cut it for her ? Did you think of that ?
He seemed like the kind to laugh it off. Not the kind to blow up about it. I had been talking to him for a while. If I thought it was an inappropriate thing to say to him at that time, I wouldn't have said it. But thankfully he was really kind in assuring me he was offended in the slightest.
