actually, I work in a pet store, and we sell packages of cotton for hamsters to use as bedding in their little hidey-holes. So the OP wasn't insane in their actions, the Hamster was just stupid. (although, OP, never do anything to a pet the owner doesn't do. Hamsters do not need cotton, they can sleep on regular bedding just fine)
I've never heard it kills them. When I was a kid, I gave my own hamsters cotton balls and they were always fine. I believe my brother gives cotton balls to his current pet mice, too.
...retard...
YDI for not doing any research. the cotton they sell in pet stores is a specific kind that will break down in their system when they accidentally eat it, or it gets caught in their pouch. Regular cotton balls don't break down like the bedding specific stuff. A hamster will always carry things in the pouches, when the non degradable stuff gets caught in their pouch they choke and die.
I call shenanigans. I've owned hamsters for YEARS, and I've always given them cotton balls for bedding. Hamsters know what is food and what is not, and they will not intentionally eat bedding or nesting material. They're not the brightest of creatures, but they still instinctually know what is food and what isn't.
I agree, hamsters aren't that stupid. And I doubt chewing on a cotton ball would really hurt the hammie...I gave my hamster cotton bedding and she simply pulled at it and shredded it to make a bed. So either this post is faker than fake or this person's hamster is a bit special...
No, they really don't hamsters eat bedding, fact, they even chew it to get into the right position, and cotton wool balls are very dangerous why don't you swallow a stomach, you have the same organs as a hamster, see if you survive.
That was dumb.Even for a hamster. He totally deserved it
