Balls

Today, I started my new job. The first thing my coworkers asked me is what football team I like. When I told them I didn't really like sports, they immediately stopped talking to me and haven't since, even when I ask them work-related questions. FML

A bit childish on their part, but I think the only course of action if this becomes a serious problem that gets in the way of your work is talk to HR or your boss. Sorry, OP.

Talk about being bad sports.. Your coworkers are seriously immature.

It's dumb for them to not talk to you but you also but up a barrier, not that they didn't help that.. But at my job the guys who don't watch sports still know enough about them to join in a conversation, and guys like me who don't know much about computer games also learn a little about them so we can join in conversations. My point is that in a work environment it's best if everyone compromises a little, it makes things much easier and people more happy.

This!! Thank you! I was starting to think everyone on here was unusually egocentric! There is workplace ettiquite, and some of that is taking a little time (seriously like a few minutes a day) to skim headlines, or Google about something that interests coworkers, and making a little small talk. Small pleasantries can go a long way! These are people that you're building your career around, and people you're around 8 hours a day- sonetimes more than your own family. Learn a little about them, let them learn a little about you. Find some common ground to connect on. It's amazing how a little sprinkling of social interaction and effort can boost workplace morale, foster a positive environment, and increase productivity. That said, their reaction is pretty ridiculous. Nothing social should get in the way of work. It's possible these guys were close to the person you've replaced. Or, that they feel threatened by you. Or maybe one of them applied for your job and didn't get it. It sounds like there's some piece of background info you don't know about, OP.

Its fantasy football time.. And everyone needs money

Don't you know if you want people to stop talking to you your suppose to say your going to vote for trump

If you only knew...but they can only stay quiet for so long...in case this comes up again always pick the one out in your closest city...so you won't get jugded...

I always get told I'm boring because I don't like sports and would rather read books. So I know how you feel. It's extremely childish. If it gets to a certain point, I'd talk to a higher up about it.

I sympathize with you 100%. I was in band in high school and had to go to every football game. I sat through every single one thinking about whatever book I was reading at the time and how I'd like to get back to it. In college I haven't attended a single game, but luckily I've found other people who like to read, and they find me interesting enough to talk to. It's totally okay to not be a sports person.

Band geeks, unite! I only went to games in HS because of band, too. And left as soon as we were allowed. I wanted to get back home in time for Star Trek: Voyager. Priorities. College games usually happened in a bar, though, by choice. Again, priorities ;)

Yeah funny how knowing stuff about sports can make you "in" with your coworkers. I got pulled over by the cop the other night and knowing about the Huskies helped me out lol. Maybe you should consider studying up just for political reasons at work!!

if they are Americans, say a European Futbol (soccer) team, if they are European, say an American football team

I went through the same thing at work. Do a good job at work and they'll get over it.

It kind of is stopping him from properly doing his job. If they don't answer any of his questions how is OP supposed to know how to fix things? Then when the boss comes over and asks why OP is having all these problems the coworkers can claim that he never asked any of them for help. Going to HR will give OP back up incase anything happens
