Today, I decided to do something nice and compliment a stranger. I told a girl that I liked her skirt and that it looked good on her. She just rolled her eyes at me and said, "I'm not gay". FML

Today, I was shopping at a supermarket. As I was about to pay for my items, I noticed the cashier was very cute. Trying to be nice, I smiled. She smiled back and said, "Hello, how are you?" Instead of saying, "I'm good" or, "I'm okay", I said, "I'm gay". FML

Today, I worked up the courage to ask out the girl I liked. I got her a nice bracelet for her birthday and asked her on a date when I gave it to her. "Aww, you're so sweet!" was the response to the gift. Her response to the date proposal? "Wait, you aren't gay?" FML

Today, I asked out a coworker I really like. She gave me a weird look and said, "You're not gay?" I said no, to which she said, "Well, I am". As it turns out, I was the only one who thought she was straight, and the only one who thought I was straight. FML

I don't think those situations are comparable. She complimented a piece of clothing, while you would be complimenting a guys ass. Saying a skirt looks great on someone would be more akin to you telling a guy his shirt looks awesome on him. I've seen guys compliment each other like that and no one gets punched in the face.

I'm wondering how this happened in Saudi Arabia, where women wear burqa in places you'd normally meet strangers and where being gay is not a thing most people would talk casually about.
