Tip for next time: say a bunch of stuff you know about him, good, bad, and indifferent. Then he'll have to lie about himself for the duration of the other relationship to convince her you didn't know him, which would be a total pain in the ass. Better than nothin'. Edit: oh yeah, I guess he might have been lying about himself to you. Still would be interesting to see the reaction.
