While I understand how this is incredibly frustrating for you and how you are negatively impacted by this and how that's not fair... The dude has a life and it's not just work. The dude should be able to live his life as he wants, take time off when he wants, because we're working to live, not live to work. That it is hugely impacting your ability to work sucks, but that doesn't make him wrong for living his life. Take a page out of his book.
If someone wants to take time off from work, that's fine, but it is their responsibility to obtain approval in advance. Especially if they are part of a team and other employees are counting on this person's contributions. Employees cannot just take time off whenever they want without repercussions.
isn't there a higher up boss that you can talk to? or go to HR. I would think that the lack of productivity would have been noticed though.... good luck
As a field engineer myself, if he’s contractor (I know in the USA at least), contract work allows you to set your own hours, days and several things that are limited, but normally, depending on contract, when you agree to be dispatched, there are terms you agree to uphold. Some of that includes agreeing to a time to be at a location and if not, you don’t put in to be the field engineer for that location/request. It sounds like you only have one of these guys on deployment total, decreasing your availability to cover all jobs. If that’s the case , your company needs to recruit more field engineers. Then again, if he agreed and does a no show, you are free to break the contract.
