Contagion

Today, while working as a veterinary assistant, an owner stood extremely close to me and kept accidentally petting me instead of her dog. After her dog was examined, she asked me if I'd ever had the chickenpox because she has shingles and it's contagious to those who haven't. I haven't. FML

How tf do you "accidentally" pet a person and not your dog?

Maybe you had the vaccine! I hope things work out for you.

Unless you a) haven't had the vaccine AND b) saw blisters on her which are not crusted, you're fine. The chickenpox virus (which can lead to shingles) is transmitted by fluids from the blisters. I'm guessing you didn't see shingles blisters, considering you allowed contact. If you haven't had the vaccine and she did have blisters, or you are still concerned, just go get the varicella vaccine as soon as possible. It can still reduce or even prevent contracting chickenpox, even after exposure. Within five days is best.

Or you could be like me and carry no immunity to it despite having chicken pox and shingles as a kid. I had to get the vaccine after I had my daughter.

This is why getting vaccines is important- you don't know when you'll come in contact with an illness, and it's better to have the vaccine than get exposed to something and have to deal with the risk of having a flare up the rest of your life. Or giving it to someone else who CAN'T get vaccinated, and them potentially dying from it.

You should have shut that down when they started to invade your space so that "accidental" petting could never even happen. Gotta respect personal space!

Don't scratch yourself! I have lots of scars because I scratched! See your doctor and quick if you think you've been exposed.

I have actually had shingles before and that is not true that it would be contagious to you. It is only contagious to people going through chemo with a weakened immune system or the fetuses of pregnant women. Even touching the puss you will not "catch it." Otherwise it is a reactivation of the chicken pox. Chicken pox stays in your blood stream after you've had it and returns as shingles a different virus. So you have to have had chicken pox to get shingles. Shingles itself can not be caught by people with a functioning immune system. That is very creepy though.

It's honestly not that contagious, I got shingles when I was 16 and the doctor literally told me that if I were to infect anyone I would have had to rub the shingles raw to the point of them bleeding then like wipe the blood on you.
