Cough up

Today, I learned I have over $10,000 in debt, despite never owning a credit card. Apparently, my ex-roommate had been replying to the credit card offers I was receiving in the mail. That also explains my missing driver's license a few months back. FML

This is fraud and is a felony. OP, turn him in and take it up with the credit bureau. He needs to go to jail for this.

I agree with all the other posts, take the roommate to court, claim the identitiy theft and right the wrong. It's all you can do, or you can roll over and just let them keep f-ing you over.

Id like to invoke my right of shinanigans on this fml, most place will ask to see your I.d. When you use a credit card, so since he stole your liscence Id think someone would notice he's not the guy in the picture of your liscence. And if it is real you simply tell him either he comes up with 10k, or you get the police involved. (And id suggest you do something quick before your credit score gets raped)

Not true. It is actually a violation of the merchant agreement for both Visa and MasterCard for a merchant to require photo ID in order to use the card. There ARE places that violate this agreement, but they are not at all in the majority. Most places do not even verify the signature. Besides which, when was the last time you got carded buying things on the internet? It's very easy these days to use a credit card that is not yours.

I've had a debit and credit card for 5 years. they only id me at the bank. I have never been checked. and I wrote on the strip on the back 'check id' they look and never do it.

It's called identity theft and it's a felony. Press charges.

I think you ought to work hard and pay off the debt. Those banks don't want to hear whiny crybaby stories about "poor me" and "victim" and "identity theft." They'll really respect you if you pay off a debt that is not legitimate. They'll probably give you a good job and a very favorable loan in the future. It's worth it!

You don't need to sue him. All you need to do is file a report with the police department and alert your card company that the charges were fraudulent. They will do an investigation and the charges will be wiped off of your account. You don't sue him for the money to pay the charges because you don't have to pay the charges. He may be fined with restitution in a court hearing so that he has to pay the charges. If he damages your credit report, you may sue him for punitive damages, which although it doesn't help your credit report, is free money. GOOD LUCK OP! (FYL indeed)

wouldn't this be considered identity theft?

Well...time for you to become a mail-order male prostitute. Make sure a client doesn't try to sauter your penisial area.
