Yep. If it's fake they should have no problem keeping a "worthless" bill. If they keep it, then it has value and they're screwing your pay.
If that's the case, that's wage theft and is most likely illegal.
Then you could just have asked to keep the note. If it is indeed genuine, you lose nothing. And if your boss really believe it's fake, he should have no objection.
