Happy Valentine's Day anyway

By Brokenheartz - This FML is from back in 2010 but it's good stuff - United Kingdom

Today, my boyfriend of 6 months told me he was not going to celebrate Valentine's Day because it was a "capitalistic consumerism holiday." He works in a bank and helps "capitalistic consumerism" 364 days a year. FML

364? Which one day gets left out? Also, I'm pretty sure banks are closed a lot more than 1 day a year.

And? Am I the only one who thinks it's disgusting that apparently you can't love someone without being expected to buy them $20 roses and whatnot. Gifts should be just what their name implies- something you get for free because someone else cares about you. Not something you whine about until you get because an arbitrary holiday says you deserve them. Seriously, has it ever occurred to you that if you have to whine at someone to get you a gift, or act romantic, or whatever, then they're probably just doing it to stop you bitching at them, and it's really not worth that much at all?

Perhaps he's not objecting to it because its capitalist and consumerist, but rather just because it tries to pretend it isn't. It really is a farce of a holiday. It commemorates nothing. Save the romance for anniversaries or just whenever you feel like it.

i'm pretty sure there's 365 days in a year...

lmao I never realized that and its 365.25 days

364 days is the point. She's saying he supports it every day but Valentines Day. It was clever, however... working for a bank is hardly the same as supporting die hard capitalist consumerism. People have to put their money somewhere.

People who say celebrations such as Christmas or Valentine's day are capitalistic must be stupid. Those traditions were invented way before our current capitalist economies, and they have a purpose. Are stores making profit from them? Yes, but in the end you are still buying that box of chocolate to show your girlfriend/boyfriend that you love her/him. If everyone else also buys a box of chocolate on that day and the stores makes a lot of money, it doesn't change the reason why you are buying it. And in fact, most stores lower their prices on special occasions anyway...

They lower their prices so they can get more people to purchase the items, and in turn, earn more money. You shouldn't need to be given gifts to know that somebody loves you, if you think so, then you are obviously very ignorant.

Wow.I can understand your inherent need to be reassured of your boyfriend's feelings for you- but to actually protest against his decision to not buy you expensive pink crap is ridiculous. Valentine's Day was created by Hallmark to sell more cards. Besides, wouldn't you rather just hang out together than go through the whole "buy expensive gifts" routine? Just being together should mean more than gifts, flowers or chocolates. (which you will eventually lose interest in, will wilt, or will consume.) And if he really works that much, he can take the day off to go to the park with you or something. What else do you need?

Nobody said he enjoys his job. He works to earn money, and doesnt want to spend that money on useless crap on a holiday where you wont buy him anything in return, it's perfectly reasonable.

But that doesn't mean he enjoys it
