Does he live with his parents? If so, he may have household obligations that he should fulfill. Was there a family event, like a funeral or a dinner? Sometimes girlfriends aren't invited, especially when they're in the "going out on dates" stage. If he's a mommy's boy who hasn't clipped the apron strings yet, you might want to find someone who's a bit more independent.

It could be possible. My friend is 21 and yet still needs her parents okay to go on a date with her boyfriend. They are very controlling...

His mom may have said no because he still has to pull his weight around the house. He might be 23, but even if he's working and living at home he still has responsibilities at home that if ya don't do you will get punished for it.
