SORRY BUT YDI. don't you think that it just MIGHT BE THE "large plug ears" that is keeping you from getting an Engineering job. My 34 year old cousin just learned this lesson, and guess what. just weeks after taking all his piercings and ear gauges out he now has a good paying full time job
I think this only applies to crazy religious countries (including the more puritan part of USA) - in Europe, tattoos and piercings are rather common among IT people. Hell, I have a plug AND a tattoo and I work in IT. In our IT ops department I can name at least three other people with tattoos from the top of my head (i.e., these are the people whose tattoos are visible when they are wearing a T-shirt). There has been only one work place that didn't hire me because of my looks and that was McDonalds during my first year of uni.
OPs username checks out.
To be fair, I can see from a company's perspective that your "plug ears" might pose a liability hazard. (Think about it...)

Show it anywayI am fully supportive of people doing whatever they like with their body. But she's not wrong.
F*** the mom. Just try to find a company which is more progressive. At my company nobody really cares how I look. They just care that I wear some decent clothes when I have to go to business meetings, but they don't care about my tunnels and piercing even there.
Just keep applying. More and more companies realize that shit like that isn't important and that what's important is your skill set. Heck, I even see more and more business owners with piercings and tattoos.
I am all for doing whatever body mods you want. However, you had to know that most white collar jobs frown upon extreme mods. We have only recently reached the point where visible tattoos are generally accepted as the norm and usually don't prohibit employment opportunities. It is unfortunate that you cannot remove the plugs and have the lobes heal normally without surgery, but I assume you knew this when you moved up your gauges to that point. Keep putting your resume out there and eventually you will find a progressive company that won't mind at all. Good luck.

I think it is ridiculous how people are not hired for things like tattoos or piercings. Within reason but come on!
I used to work in a hospital and 98% of our engineering department had tattoos, but most were covered with short sleeves. It really depends on what dept. you work in. If it's on the corporate/business end of things you are expected to have a clean-cut look. As long as it can be hidden it isn't a problem. An image is a huge deal.
