Today, my friend told me that 50% of all marriages end in divorce. Since he's my friend, I didn't want to call him out too bad, so I joked that 90% of statistics are made up on the spot. He called me an idiot and lectured me on how I'd just made that figure up myself. I need new friends. FML

Gather some real statistical data and run a multiple regression with an alpha level of .05 to determine what negative characteristics are contributing to your poor friend choices. Then use that to improve. Problem solved. :)

He's right it's somewhere between 50 and 60%

One true thing - the leading cause of divorce is marriage. Without marriage, there would be no divorce... But yeah. You need new friends dude.

He was wrong it's only about 30% but why the **** not just correct him instead of making fun of him? If I said something that I genuinely though was true and my friend decided instead of correcting me, to mock me I think my feelings would be hurt..? Why is just being normal and honest with your friend such a no-go??

No, his friend is correct. 50% of first marriages end in divorce, and the percentage goes up in second and third marriages. I'm going off statistics based in the U.S which is where OP lives. I'm not sure about other countries.

The stats are complicated, even just for the U.S.. The 30% stat represents the percentage of first marriages that end in divorce. Second marriages are higher. Third, fourth, and so on have an increasing rate of divorce until a plateau occurs at 99.99% and holds since there is no such thing as 100% predictability. The current, average rate of divorce for all marriages in the United States is just above 50%.

That's good considering the other 50% of marriages end in death

Why? OP's friend was about correct. It's around 50%, the divorce rate.

Your friend was right about 50% ending in divorce. Maybe you should do your own research before "calling someone out too bad" because you sound like a total jackass.

That's a myth. It's an old saying meant to scare people away from marriage. It's more like 30-40% in the US

It actually tends to vary pretty significantly depending on country, probably due to cultural and socio-economic factors, and according to my research, it is 50% in the us.

Last I checked, in the US, it's about 45% for first marriages, 62% for second marriages, 78% for third marriages, and after the 3rd marriage it is almost 90% that end in divorce. If you take the totals and don't break it down by which number marriage it is, it rounds out to almost exactly 50% of all marriages that end in divorce.

some people just don't have a sense of humor

Thats actually true, has been in the usa since th 1980s, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

100% of marriages end in divorce or death

do you know that 90% of friendships will end due to arguments about some bullshit which is not related to any of them..
