Spiralling out of control

Today, I was told a job offer that would've changed my life had been taken back, due to one part in the onboarding process. I’ve already sold my car, ended the lease to my apartment, and purchased a non refundable plane ticket. With little to no money and the Christmas break coming soon, I feel like I’m going to die with no backup plan. FML

Contact a lawyer ,depending on where you are this is illegal.

Isn't there some money they give you if they cancel the contact? Can they just wake up in the morning and decide that they don't want you to come?

You can definitely sue. Especially if it if you can prove loss of funds/opportunities from taking the offer. It's not spoken about a lot but the law is definitely on your side. There are laws regarding this most people don't follow up.

That sucks and depending on the details of the situation may be illegal… OP did not say exactly why the intended employer did this. It could have been the result of poor judgement on the part of the company and unexpected business conditions, it could be because they suddenly found someone they think is a better fit, or it could be the result of more throughly checking OP’s background or references. The first two could result in a lawsuit, the last could be the fault of OP (don’t blame me, I am just telling you how these things usually work). I have observed all three of these possibilities in my career… Unfortunately a lawsuit does not get money in the bank very fast. OP might need to see if they can get their old job back, find a new one, or move in with the parents if any of these are options. This is a horrible example of why it’s best not to burn your bridges behind you and why you leave you current job on a cordial basis.
