Today, a customer yelled at me so furiously that she sprayed my face with spittle. I had to stand there, smiling and politely explaining that I needed to see a receipt before I could give her a refund. When she finally gave up and left, my boss bitched me out for "provoking the customer". FML

Retail: basically the middle man to take everyone's abuse.

I hope a better job opens up for you OP. I quit working retail after a male customer tried punching me after I told him we didn't have a shoe in his size.

What the **** is with dumbass bosses in these "bitch customer" FMLs?

Because the bosses and 'bitch customers' follow a simple phrase: The customer is always right. ...Even if they're not, of course. Sorry that happened to you OP, I would have ended up slapping her. Bitchy and rude customers are the worst! I always politely let my customers know when they step over a line and they tend to get slightly more pleasant... but I know not everyone will be that way. Hope you don't deal with her again though.

I agree, I think reacting calmly and and politely telling them that they are being rude and that there's no reason for them to treat another person like that, especially when they wouldn't want to be treated that way, goes much further than yelling back at them. Although it's much harder to keep calm like that when you want to yell back, but it does work more in your favour.

People are stupid thats why I stay away from them

Love your username op! That's hilarious

It's ok op, I had a woman threaten to tell my manager on me because I made a mistake that was easily fixable. She told me I didn't know how to listen and that I needed to learn how to do my job correctly.

From all the horror stories about working in retail I read on FML...it sounds miserable. I'm sorry OP.

It's honestly starting to annoy me when people say things like "I had to sit there and smile" when they're dealing with a shitty customer. I work in retail as well, and I know for a fact that I won't be reprimanded if I were to wipe my face off if someone were literally spitting on me for something I had little control over. Grow a backbone guys, you don't have to sit through the bullshit with a smile on your face.

Actually if we so much as frown at customers at my job we can get written up. Our policy is "yes we can" so of course the customer is always right and we have to say everything with a smile.

Sounds familiar, where do you work?

Think about selling a different product/service, something you love or believe in passionately, and you will only rarely let a customer get under your skin. Remember as well to establish and maintain boundaries at all times! You will never EVER be paid well enough to have someone spit on you. Ask yourself if you are paid enough to engage in argument with customers and if you ever will be. FYL this time, but if something similar happens again... YDI.
