Today, a nearby volcano erupted for the second time. We were all urged to keep our windows and doors closed in case of ash clouds. My father responded by opening every window and door and shouting, "Come at me, bro!" FML

Hey guys, OP Here! (I realised I wasn't logged in when I posted this FML) Just letting you guys know that I don't actually live in Auckland and I do live in one of the towns that could be affected by the volcano.

It's just a little volcanic ash, no harm done. You'll be fine... I think.

Is this the Mt. Doom stunt double I read about?

Nah, the one that erupted was Mt Tongariro. The one they used for Mt Doom (Mt Ngauruhoe) is (technically) a secondary cone of Mt Tongariro, but it isn't the one erupting. Although there's actually a trio of volcanoes pretty much touching each other (the other one being Mt Ruapehu, which is also the largest), Mt Ngauruhoe looks the most volcano-like so they digitally removed the others for the movie.

My flats mates bf did that too. Yay for males in NZ

I think the largest health concern is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicavolcanoconiosis (I'm not making this up). Being so fine, volcanic ash particles can cause damage to the alveoli in your lungs detrimentally affecting oxygen exchange mechanisms. Mostly though, its just a fun word to say.
