Wow. Even my 6-year-old can get his own lunch cooked. My 8-year-old made everyone California rolls and smoothies for lunch, last weekend. Sad that your kid won't attempt a Cup Noodles or something. (Not sure who the "better" parent is... you for actually feeding your kids and fostering the expectation of regular board, or me for making them fend for themselves so often they have learned to cook.)
An 11 year old is old enough to make a sandwich or some chicken nuggets in the microwave. They are also old enough to understand how work can cause you to be tired. If your child doesn't know how to do any of these things or understand these concepts yet, you need to sit down and have some conversations already!
What the grandmother must be is her dads mother, and in turn, doesn't fully trust her daughter-in-law, and has said something like, "if something goes wrong call grandma and shell be there"
At 11 she should be able to make a sandwich or cup-of-noodles.
Maybe the 11 year old just wanted mom to make DINNER. The OP seems to be doing something right, having family dinners together. It sounds like this 11 year old was just a smart politician, not necessarily a kid who could feed themselves.
If I had tried that when I was younger there would have been hell to pay after grandma left.

FYL for living close enough to your mother in law that she can knock on your door without buying a plane ticket first.
I knew the concept of responsibility when I was 9! when I was 10 I was ten I was at least able to cook eggs in a couple ways. my mom worked nights and was always exhausted. she still cooked most of the time but on the rare occasions she didn't, I was able to step up. kids today are too over babied. so glad I'm not growing up with this generation
