Today, after helping run salads and bread to a table, they demanded I do something about the bug problem. I would've been more understanding if they hadn't chosen to sit outside. FML

Squee I get my follow up badge!! OP here. :D I'm a server at a chain Italian restaurant that is NOT Olive Garden. There were two servers manning our patio with almost 20 tables, and one of those servers also had to come inside and make all of the alcoholic beverages for the entire patio. Me, being a bored inside server and a selfless team player, ran a couple salads out for the guy tending bar. They seemed annoyed when I walked up and complained that they'd asked for bread. I whisked away and brought back twice the amount of bread for a five top (they just looked the part) when the lady said "UGH!" and pointed to a gnat that had flown into her Caesar salad, on the side of the plate she had already cleared. "Oh no!" I exclaim. "That's terrrible, would you like me to take this back and have it remade?" She declined, and that's when she rather nastily said we should REALLY do something about the bugs. I just looked at her and said sorry, we're outside, there's not much I can do about it. I did tell a manager, and he talked to them, but I doubt they were satisfied by his pointing out that we don't have nets and waving his arms at these imaginary nets. :x Anyways, sorry for the novel, I've been waiting for this day far too long. Thank you FML community, and remember, don't forget to tip your server. :D

I bet that really bugged you..... I'll let myself out.

And this is why I hate working retail/restaurants now, there are far too many stupid people out there who expect you to bend over backwards and do what they want, when you can't. It should have been ducking obvious to the dumb bitch that outside + food = insects...

Teach them to smoke, unless you can't smoke outside in your city.

Haha I actually always light a cigarette to keep bugs away, if smoking is allowed.

We don't allow smoking, but I'll remember this for my own outdoor adventures. :3

You did your job and handled it professionally. That's all your boss can ask for

I am a server too, I'm sorry OP! I swear people find anything to complain about to get a free meal.

one of the biggest pet peeves i have developed while working retail is when customers have a really stupid request or questions that I would have no way of solving.

I agree. It's like easiest jobs you can get hired for but the pay and the stupid people are not worth it!

I agree. Op handled the situation perfectly. . You just can't please some people

you handled them very well ^^ i hope thry left a tip of some variation.

Thanks guys! I always try to maintain professionalism, at least in front of the guest. We just make fun of them in the back or after work at the bar. xD And I do love what I do. I've been in food service for 13 years and actually left supervisory positions to go back to serving. I make really good money (usually) and don't deal with TOO many guests like this. And I think the server got a good tip from them, he's one of those big personality guys that can yuck it up with a table for ages, so I'm sure he did a good job recovering. And I just finished a long close so cheers, y'all!!

I'm guessing Carrabba's. Was it Carrabba's? I love the bread there. I bet it was Carrabba's.

I once had a woman(I kidd you not) complain about there being too much lettuce in her salad. Server life is rough but a lot of times it can be very rewarding!

Brio. :) Bravo is our sister restaurant.

Some people are unbelievable honestly!

haha last week in The Netherlands 2 girls complained about a hair in their sandwich... AFTER they finished it. Another guy pointed out that that was not normal, turned into a verbal fight. video got in youtube... and now they are harrased throughout the country. check "terrasmeisjes" haha... always stay polite

"today, at my job at a restaurant, a table complained about the bugs. I would have understood, had they not been sitting outside. FML" the way you worded this FML made it a little confusing.

Are you really that stupid? The people were complaining about bugs being with them while they ate outside where bugs live. OP would have understood if they were eating inside and were complaining about bugs since bugs don't belong inside. Is that easier for you to comprehend?

They are saying that they did not understand that OP worked at a restaurant because OP didn't specify this. Not that it wasn't obvious.

Dude really how bored are you?

I'm referring to the original FML being obvious.

That must have put a real GNAT in your head... #worstpunever

Maybe a few bug zappers will help...or screen in the porch...

That'd only work if they're serving Cajun cuisine.

Like someone said before: offering a table inside would have been a viable solution...

Get a ziplock bag, put a few pennies inside then fill the bag with water. That keeps them away.

Apparently just saw it on buzzfeed, listerine mouthwash just spray or wipe it on surfaces that you don't want bugs around, they stay away....

Don't like bugs? Don't sit outside. Simple as that.
