Unprofessional bastard. He's screwing it up for everyone, on a selfish whim. He should suck it up and do what he agreed to do. If you can't go on, make sure to explain why.
I can't imagine an actor who'd ruin an entire production single handedly like that. I hope he concurs or you find a replacement, OP.
Make sure you let anyone else in other productions what kind of person this actor is. To go through all those rehearsals and then decide opening night he isn't satisfied with his role is completely unprofessional
Go on stage and then announce to the audience, "I'm sorry but unfortunately [ACTOR'S NAME] has decided that the role given to him was not good enough for him. There will be a slight delay. To all of the talent scouts, agents, and directors in the audience, I apologize on [ACTOR'S NAME]'s behalf. He'll never get a job again.
woah.
This is what ears are for. Grab him by the ear and drag him onto the stage like a little kid, if you have to.
Why did he wait so long to tell you he's not performing.(assuming yall had rehersed a few times in advance). I hope you can find a replacment. If not do what you were born to do.........improvise
he could have told you that earlier.
Help him break a leg
