That is utterly unprofessional of that actor. Try to convince him, if he played the role temporarily, you'll do your best to get him the role he wants. I know that this maybe construed as deceiving and lying, but at least it'll get you out of this predicament..

Make sure you let anyone else in other productions what kind of person this actor is. To go through all those rehearsals and then decide opening night he isn't satisfied with his role is completely unprofessional
