Today, after weeks of oral pain and hundreds of dollars in dentistry fees, we found the culprit: a popcorn kernel that floss was unable to remove. FML

iAlissa tells us more.

There was indeed lots of blood. It was lodged so deep between my molar and my wisdom tooth that they essentially had to surgically remove it. :(

Damn those are awful. Even if you were able to get it out, it'd be 38 hours later, after all your attempts it would have come out on its own after you gave up, and you'd have already flossed your gums till the bled trying to get that out.

Sometimes what pops up might surprise you.

That sucks, speaking from experience popcorn kernels are the worst thing to get stuck in your teeth and to that extent well FYL

Could have been worse. Could have been a General.

There's one thing that couldn't be worse- that joke.

Dentists should study a whole school module on popcorn kernels: the mouth's worst enemy.

We don't have a module on them, but we actually do get drilled on them! (Over and over and over...) So far, it's been talked about in at least five of my courses this semester. Popcorn is super bad for your teeth and boy, do they make sure that we all know it.

But popcorn is the greatest food on earth...how can something so good be so bad for you :'(

Bad for your teeth but good for your body... Popcorn needs to make up it's mind

Don't you just hate it when that happens?

That's why I stopped eating popcorn. I do miss it at times, especially the white cheddar. *Homer Simpson moment*

If you ever get a popcorn kernel stuck in your teeth, try not to floss aggressively or use a toothpick, no matter how tempting. It's better to rinse gently with saltwater, then to gently floss. If you can't get it out, keep gently swishing to help work it out. Gently, gently, gently - healthy gums should never bleed when flossing! It's so easy to hurt the gingiva and that causes lots of problems down the road. OP, I'm so sorry that you had to go through that. Infections in the mouth totally suck and there's not much that you could have done other than what you already did. FYL indeed.

You know, I've been getting that "healthy guns never bleed" line all my life, but my gums have -always- bled, from simple brushing, even using toothpaste for sensitive gums and such. Doesn't the bleeding act much like tears in trying to flush away things? I've never had a cavity in my life, I just get repeatedly told my gums are bleeding a lot and that I need to work on the gumline. No matter what. They just bleed at the slightest thing.

My gums aren't too sensitive actually. However, this particular satanic kernel made my gums bleed so horribly that if you hadn't known better, you would've thought satan himself had sacrificed something

#27 - Bleeding actually doesn't flush bacteria out - it lets it seep into the gum tissue where it causes infection and breakdown of the gingival tissue and, eventually, the alveolar bone and support structure of the tooth. :( That's why your dentist will always tell you that bleeding gums are a problem. I'm not very far in my training and I don't know your case, so I don't know why your gums bleed. My perio instructor always recommends modified bass technique for her perio/gingivitis patients though, so maybe look it up and talk to your dentist. It's a kind of brushing motion that focuses on the gumline and the tiny gap called the sulcus that exists between the gum tissue and the tooth. It cleans it out so there are fewer bacteria to cause bleeding.

27 - You're brushing too hard or using the wrong brush. Gums are NOT supposed to bleed. Bleeding gums is the first sign of gingivitis. Once you start flossing properly everyday, your gums will toughen up and become healthy (which means no bleeding)

#60 I've tried -everything- and they still bleed. Soft brush, two different kinds of electric, tons of different toothpastes, brushing methods, they just bleed. It's not a ton, and it's not painful, just a reliable thing. I'm going to be very insistent on the fact it doesn't hurt, because that's the part that the dentist never seems to get. I have to wonder if it's more a blood thing than a gum thing. My nasal passages bleed very easily too, and while I know split lips bleed a lot in general I think mine bleed more than average for minor cracks.

Wow i know how annoying those can be getting stuck,But I never knew it could get that bad...

Oh gods, you probably had one cling to the tooth like a skin and drive in under the gum. I HATE it when that happens. Hurts like hell and not much you can do except use water. Floss pretty much never gets in there.
