Sounds like you might be sick. Never dive sick. Also, you should be starting in a pool. Equalizing is easily overcome, you just need to work at it. Did they tell you to go up a few meters, equalize, then descend again?
If you had a sore throat, it sounds like you were getting sick and that could be the reason why you couldn't clear your ear. If this is your dream and you really want to do this, don't give up so easily!
Wrong, you can't fly after a scuba dive
I'm a dive instructor so I know the physics and physiology but by all means, please enlighten me why it would be dangerous to dive post-flight. (Considering that none of the biggest certifying agencies such as PADI, SSI, CMAS or RAID agree with you I'm really looking forward to your arguments on this one)
this whole thing sounds fishy. your life savings was $500? and it sounds like you had a little cold do why would that abort your entire life plan?

If 500$ is your savings you shouldnt be on holiday..just saying
Are you sure it was an instructor development course you signed up for? Usually it doesn't start with dives in open water and and 500$ also sounds too cheap.. Get a lot of rest and good luck on your future dives, equalising problems are the worst!
