My parents don't get tax refunds. Never really understood the whole idea behind big tax refunds. You're overpaying on taxes and letting the government borrow money for free...

it cost more than their tax return to take care of you. if money was their concern it would have been cheaper for them not to have you around.

Don't think the "only reason" holds water. Sure parents joke this, but kids cost thousands each year and you go whatever you can for them. Bottom lip be us the tax deduction will pay for the kid's expenses for less than a week!
