I'm guessing Australia? And you only had 50s because that's what ATMs deal with, and cabs only carry $20 in change to discourage a hold up. Yea cab driver can't demand collateral, but you should really mention not having change before the ride...

Besides, if you have the cash, it's the taxi driver's prerogative to be able to accept it, so he shouldn't have needed collateral. He also knew where you lived.
