Today, I got fired from my job for stopping a shoplifter. Where's the logic? FML

The logic is that the shoplifter could have a gun, a knife or something like that. Your job would rather lose whatever is being stolen than pay for your medical expenses.

I used to work for a convenience store. The manager posted a sign behind the counter. "NOTHING IN THIS STORE IS YOURS, OR WORTH YOUR LIFE." Just keep telling yourself you're just the guy in the middle, but it isn't affecting you directly.

When I managed to place my policy was give them what they want and get them out. I did not want any of my employees or customers hurt.

many retail businesses specifically tell employees not to stop shoplifters for fear of injury to yourself, customers or co-workers. not worth risking your life for that

Because most places have security cameras and they just turn the footage over to the police, it's safer and cheaper.

I work part time in retail. I was told under no circumstance am I ever allowed to confront a shoplifter. It has more to with your safety than anything. You can replace merchandise, but you can't replace your life.

Same thing happened to my friend. He was head of security at Target and he noticed a repeat shoplifter who put stolen stuff in her child's backpack. One day when they were closing and she was the only customer left, he locked the front door and asked for the stuff back. He was fired because she could've sued Target for unlawful imprisonment since he "locked her in"

My dad used to work “public safety” (their term for security) at a mall. They’re not allowed to stop shoplifters, bc “they are potential shoppers.” Smh.
