Today, I had lunch with an old friend I've had a crush on for years. We're both single, so I figured it to be kind of like a date. Until he started talking about how he told his brother last night that we would never be a thing. FML

I mean, to be fair, I have done the same thing because I didn't think the other person shared my feelings. I wanted to protect myself from seeming like *I* thought it was a date by clarifying that it wasn't -- didn't want to seem interested because I thought he wasn't interested so I overcorrected and referred to him as basically my brother, best friend, etc. All because I liked him and really WANTED it to be a date, etc.

That sucks. As someone who has been friendzoned by a crush, I know how that feels. The best thing you can do, OP, is to stop hanging out with him altogether and move on.

If you can get over the crush and stay friends with that person, that's great. But if you can't get over it and the unreciprocated feelings make you miserable, then I'd say it's better to call it quits.

If they're an old friend you should never expect it to be a date. with a new person that's understandable but with an old friend it needs to be stated clearly that you're going out before you should think it's a date.
